A few months ago, I shared the fashion pieces I was looking for at the thrift store. These were mostly cool-weather items (leather jackets and the like). With the changing of the seasons, I thought I’d make this a regular series — to show you more of what I am hunting for at the thrift store, along with how I’d style it.
I think one of the biggest hurdles to shopping vintage or secondhand, for so many people, is the styling aspect. Items at thrift stores aren’t generally styled and it’s difficult to see the forest for the trees (or, in this case, how a pair of men’s pajamas might look when you bring them home and style them on yourself).
I hope to break that down a little bit with this newsletter, by showing you a mix of vintage and new pieces, and how great they can look alongside one another. Let’s go shopping, shall we?
Vintage silk pajamas
Vintage silk pajama sets are the chicest bathing suit coverup. They also work as a fun nighttime outfit (add some heeled sandals, a slicked-back bun, gold hoops and a red lip). Honestly, they do it all. The trick is to find one with a collar (the collarless versions don't look as classic) in either a single color like black, chocolate or navy — or in a classic pattern (think stripes or dots, some animal-prints work if it’s a high quality material).
vintage silk pajamas // brown bikini top (I own this bikini and it is so flattering) // brown bikini bottoms // blue check beach towel // oversized sunglasses // Glowscreen SPF 40 (this sunscreen covers so well and adds a glow to your skin at the same time) // Havaianas square-toed flip-flops (have these too and love them) // gold-plated earrings
1990s cord necklaces
I feel like I’m noticing ‘90s-style cord necklaces everywhere lately. This Ben-Amun number, for instance, is recalling something I would have piled in my basket during a weekend trip to Claire’s. These are all over the place at thrift stores. Look for something on a black or brown cord, and try to stick with silver or gold charms in shapes like squares or spirals (pretty timeless shapes that don’t look too overtly 1990s).
vintage spiral cord necklace (can’t get much better than $10!) // lace-up leather sandals // strapless jersey dress // palm-shaped leather bag // matte lipstick in Minx // dry body oil (I have this and use it constantly — it’s the best for a gleamy, well-moisturized shoulder and it sinks in and isn’t at all greasy)
Vintage silk slip dresses
Okay, okay, I know I just implored you to buy a pair of vintage silk pjs but, while you’re at it, you should stock up on slips as well. Like the aforementioned two-piece set, the slip dress is surprisingly versatile. I love the way Dannijo’s Danielle Snyder styled her silk slip dress, by layering a vintage Hawaiian Tropic tee (sliced into a crop top) over top. You can also style it more simply — add a cardigan, some delicate necklaces — and a pair of silk ballet flats (having a major moment, btw) to really amp up the femininity.
silk Mary-Jane flats (under $200 and incredible) // vintage polka dot slip dress // black clutch // nail polish in Rowan // satin hair ribbon // sterling silver hoops
Rapid Fire
A recipe I’m obsessed with: This grain-free, gluten-free Buffalo chicken tender salad (complete with dairy-free ranch I dream about).
A product I purchased: An eyelash growth serum that promises longer, thicker lashes in 28 days — and it’s clean and under $100.
The only New York earthquake content I care about: Her.
