The best thing about thrifting, in my opinion, is the sheer variety of merchandise. We all know it’s better for the environment to shop secondhand — and that some pretty amazing deals abound when you do so — but you can also find incredible, unique things you just can’t shop for elsewhere.
One of my favorite ways to shop a thrift store is to look for fairly specific items — specific materials or colors or shapes that guide what ultimately goes in my cart. So here, I’ve rounded up the top three things I’m looking for at the thrift store now, along with some examples of items I would pull at the thrift (all of which happen to be available for purchase online, if you don’t happen to feel like digging through Goodwill to find them).
For me, it’s all about the mix, and these trends pair well with a multitude of aesthetics, and more modern pieces. If you happen to find any of the below at your local Goodwill/Salvation Army/etc., shoot me a note or leave a comment! Love seeing how you all style things in your own homes.
Glass Who’s-It’s and What’s-It’s
In the antiques world, smaller accessories are referred to simply as “smalls,” but I take a cue from Ariel (the little mermaid) and call them “Who’s-Its and What’s-It’s.” Tiny, vibrant pieces — glass vases, intricate bowls — can be so artful when displayed in the right way, and are all over the place at the thrift store and online vintage marketplaces. There are also a number of outstanding pieces available by modern-day artists that are worth mixing in with the old stuff.

Travertine
I feel like travertine really never gets old and kind of always has its moment. It was big in the 1980s and ‘90s and it never really left. These days, it can veer super minimal rather than Miami Beach. Look for travertine tables, of course, but also smaller accessories, like trays and boxes.

Photography
I love photography and think it can have such an impact on a space (see the above room designed by Constance Gennari, for instance). eBay is a great resource.

If you happen to be in Manhattan over the next few months, stop in to Bergdorf Goodman, where a handful of my original artworks are now on display, and available for purchase, through April.
and I’ll leave you with this…
I love the staggered travertine coffee table in that inspiration image. I’m hoping one day one will be waiting for me at the thrift store 🤞🏻 this post is a great reminder on how mixing materials adds interest to a space 😎
