The Long & Short(s) of It

Wearing shorts doesn't have to be so embarrassing.

One of the best purchases I’ve made all summer? A pair of $5, 1990s Kathy Ireland sweatshorts, with the tags still on, from an estate sale. I got a pair in gray and a pair in black (both were unworn!) and even I was like, “Why am I buying these?” as I checked out.

But you know what? I’ve worn those damn shorts almost every day since I got them. Both pairs are made of cotton jersey. There’s no hem on the bottom and there’s a drawstring at the waist, so they are supremely comfy.

I get it: Shorts are divisive. I hated them for a long time. But in recent months, I’ve embraced them. And I think it’s because I’ve found shorts that are actually….flattering. The cool girl shorts of 2023 range from cotton boxers to $15 pairs from Target. They’re comfortable! They don’t stick to your thighs, or ride up too high. They look good!

A book worth buying: The Home Style Handbook by Lucy Gough.

A show I’m watching: Only Murders in the Building Season 3. It’s the best. So funny, so cute, and the design of the characters’ New York apartments is so great.

A recipe I made (& loved): I have a lot of travel planned for the coming months, so I’ve been taking it very easy, food-wise. When I travel, I like to eat everything the city I’m in is known for but when I’m home, I cook 95% of my meals and I keep them pretty free of gluten, sugar, and dairy (mostly because it makes me feel and sleep so much better when I don’t eat those things). I made this Greek salmon for dinner recently with pretty low expectations but it was great and so nutritious.
