Last weekend, I left an estate sale with a big stack of Architectural Digest coffee table books from the 1970s.
I don’t think I’ve looked at anything else since.
The books are resonating with me in such a major way — the colors, the textures, the patterns, the tension. It’s all very sexy. And it’s back. (Case in point: the cover of Harry’s House. Oh — and Paco Rabanne is back! And this time with NFTs!)
Now, I’m not talking about the 1970s of costume parties: the bell-bottoms, the headbands, the go-go boots. I’m talking about late ‘70s glam. Lots of white, touches of brass and chrome, caftans that worked for day or night.
So this issue, I devoted to the era of excess, glam, and pretty wonderful interior design — the 1970s — and rounded up some bits and bobs from old Architectural Digests that I can’t stop thinking about. Plus, I found some modern takes on the trend, to inject a bit of hedonism into the everyday, 2022-style.
That was then.
This is now.
And these are some subtle ways to nail the look.
Tala Echo table lamp, $460 // Bottega Veneta dome earrings, $800 (The J. Crew sculptural orb earring is honestly just as good and I just feel like this is going to be a huge trend for fall) // R. Magritte lithograph, $299 // Paco Rabanne bag, $830
And I’ll leave you with this….
