It’s well-established at this point that thrifting is kind of my “thing.” I wrote a book about it, I talk about it constantly on Instagram (and now Threads) …. I’ve been doing it for literal decades, and started well before I gave much regard to sharing my tips and tricks with others.
In recent years, it’s really exploded in popularity and for good reason: it’s a much more sustainable way to shop than, say, dropping in to your local shopping mall or big-box store. But it’s also a really great way to shop high-end trends at affordable prices. That sounds counter-intuitive, right? After all, most people associate thrifting with shopping vintage. But all of the design trends you see today are rooted in what’s been done before.
One of my favorite trends of the moment is the marble or stone table. Marble is, historically, a very luxe material and one that never truly goes out of style. That being said, lately designers are using marble, travertine and other stone tables in unique ways, to add instant sophistication to nearly any space. Of course, these materials are expensive. But they abound at your local thrift store. So that’s kind of the best place to shop stone — particularly the larger pieces.
Below, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite rooms that utilize stone tables (so there’s lots of styling inspo), plus I’ve shown you some of the best stone tables I’ve personally sourced at the thrift. And, of course, there are some tips to styling your own stone table at home, once you find yours.
See all that inspo above? It is totally possible to find some very similar pieces at the thrift. Here’s what I mean.
Marble table: thrifted (but this side table from Crate & Barrel is very similar) // resin vase // pop art book // David Hockney book
Stone table: thrifted (this one is similar) // Andy Warhol book // bars vase // Framed print
Marble Art Deco table: thrifted // iron outdoor chair // candleholder // resin bowl
