Perhaps it’s no surprise that President’s Day has a long history. The first one was celebrated in 1800, following the 1799 death of George Washington. But by the 1970s, the mood had shifted. Sure, we all wanted to celebrate our nation’s first president, but we also wanted more three-day weekends. So, a bill was signed into law creating more holidays (specifically so union workers could actually enjoy some time off). What began as a way to commemorate one man eventually became a way to commemorate all of the dudes who have lead our nation.
But for most of us, President’s Day has historically been about getting a long weekend off of school. And as an adult, it’s about getting steep discounts on stuff you probably don’t need to begin with.
With that in mind, here’s what I’m buying (or, in some cases, already bought) this weekend, while I can get it on sale. God bless America.
These are my favorite socks. I bought them in New Hampshire because I was freezing, without even realizing they said anything (they were folded in a package at the shop where I got them). When I put them on and saw how hilarious they were, I fell so deeply in love. It’s like a secret inside joke when you wear them with pants.
It’s tie-dye. It’s cashmere. It’s an extra 20% off with the code EXTRA20 (this is the lowest price you will ever find Elder Statesman, btw).
This is the chicest baseball cap I’ve ever seen and it’s on super sale.
There is nothing like an oversized tee. This one hits all the mark: really perfect fit, with long and loose sleeves that won’t fit too snug, a hem that’s long enough to be worn out of pants (or tucked in, if you prefer), and a range of hues (though I love the tawny brown). Did I mention it’s $15?
I find myself getting really into coin jewelry lately which, if you shop vintage, can get steep, price-wise. This modern version is very cool, under $20, and would look great layered.
I’ve been dealing with hormonal breakouts for several months now and I’ve tried a lot: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, hydrafacials, you name it. I have read really stellar reviews of the Peter Thomas Roth Acne Clearing Gel, which contains AHAs and BHAs to help prevent the formation of acne. I’ve heard in reviews that it helps treat existing breakouts, too, so I threw it in my cart and have my fingers crossed.
If you are in the market for some bigger-ticket items, this weekend is actually a really good opportunity to make them. Design Within Reach, Casper and some other home brands are offering pretty steep discounts on things like Eames computer chairs and hybrid mattresses. Plus, you can find pieces from Kelly Wearstler and Slim Aarons on sale to round out a room. Also, the piece I am asked the absolute most about in my own home — this tabletop easel with which to display art — is on sale.

So I guess the whole “aliens” thing last weekend was a false alarm. It’s looking increasingly like those balloons we shot down were old spy balloons that were way off course or possibly just a hobbyist group’s homemade radio balloon that posed about as much of a security threat as a plastic bag blowing in the breeze.

My all-time-favorite podcast, You’re Wrong About, dove into Napster this week. Ah, a simpler time, when I was spending hours trying to download unreleased *NSYNC songs and simultaneously fearing the FBI was going to break down my door and arrest me for piracy.
PS. You can now shop my book, Big Thrift Energy, at ban.do! My book has been out for several months now but it continues to be such a fun journey seeing new retailers pick it up and new audiences purchase it. ban.do is a retailer with an aesthetic that makes so much sense for BTE, so I was pretty excited about this one.
And I’ll leave you with this….
