How I Get Enough Protein Without Being Weird About It
Also: I have a secret source for (cheap! like $8!) designer athleisure
If you’re new around here, I recently embarked on a 12-week journey to get in the best shape of my life. I’m working out with a trainer twice per week, working out three times per week on my own, and focusing on strength over cardio (lifting heavy weights and nailing my form and doing incline walks to get my heart rate up).
More here:
Here’s what I’m not doing: HIIT, crash dieting, or any weird “fad” stuff. I’m also doing this while I live my real life so I’m not being psychotic about it. In September and October, I have a lot of back-to-back travel planned. I’ll work out at my hotels when I can, but I’ll also eat what I want.
Week one was focused on getting in my groove. Week two was largely about me hitting my protein goals. Protein is the buzzword in nutrition these days but honestly, adding more has been transformative for me.

I store my protein powders and creatine in these glass canisters (use VIRGINIA20 for 20% off), which are much more aesthetic than the horrid packaging they come in.
I’m getting protein via my favorite protein powder (30 grams per two tablespoons, which I either mix directly in to hot oatmeal, or into a shake with a frozen banana, cauliflower rice, fleur de sel and almond milk) but also through a lot of whole food sources (more on that, below). And I’m supplementing — I love all of Lemme’s products, but I’ve been relying on the Lemme Burn capsules to give me a boost (these have green tea and B12, so they give you energy).
I’m also taking creatine (two teaspoons per day, mixed in to my oatmeal or my protein shakes), which has a ton of benefits for your brain but also creates a steady supply of energy to your muscles.
