Several months ago, I spoke on a virtual panel alongside Lydia Geisel, the Home Editor at Domino, one of my all-time favorite publications. Lydia and I spoke to a group of public relations professionals about Substack, and why home and design brands need to take newsletters seriously.

While the panel was largely focused on all things professional, we did speak a little bit about vintage, and Lydia mentioned she had several vintage pieces in her home. I thought it only fitting that she share more about her best find ever here on the newsletter, so I was thrilled when she agreed to share her stunning teak table sourced in upstate New York.

So, take it away, Lydia (and take a look at Domino’s Substack, if you haven’t already)…

“The best thing I ever thrifted is a square teak wood coffee table from the 1950s. I can’t tell you how long I’d been searching for the perfect coffee table (definitely over a year). Finding something vintage wasn’t the only box I was trying to check. I wanted it to be square and have a shelf so I could style it with books and objects. I also needed it to be fairly lightweight so I could easily move it from apartment to apartment (I’ve moved twice in the past year alone). This piece had everything I was looking for.

I’m not sure if it was refinished at some point but the wood top and the cane shelf are in pristine condition, which was another major draw.

I was in Hudson, New York, at Regan & Smith Antiques. I had almost spent $1,200 on a super cool (in hindsight, way too big) coffee table just down the street at Bridge House Vintage because I love literally everything they sell. My fiancé and I decided to explore the next block before making our final decision and—voila!—there it was right by the entrance of the store.

With tax, I believe it came to around $642 and it fit like a glove in the back of our car with all the seats down.

The table sits in the heart of our living room now. I’ve had so much fun topping it with my favorite design and art books, a shell-shaped dish that holds some thrifted rattan coasters (no drink rings on this baby!), and my most treasured piece of Majolica. What really makes this table so special is that about an hour after buying it, my now-fiancé proposed to me at The Maker. He knows the key to my heart is a day spent antique shopping and at a beautiful hotel!”

Thank you so much, Lydia. This table is so special and proof that sometimes holding out for the right thing is the best appraoch to design (and life!)

Below the jump:

  • Lily Allen and David Harbour have listed their stunning Brooklyn townhome, just days after she released her album that absolutely skewers him. Iconic behavior.

  • I found an energy drink I actually like and it isn’t terrible for you.

  • I also found a killer postmodern bar cabinet that is out of my price range but inspiring me nonetheless.
